Why Should You Choose a University of Malaysia?

There are a lot of undergraduate medicine programs to choose from in Malaysia. All the programs have different strengths and weaknesses, so it’s important for aspiring undergraduate medicine students to find their perfect fit. Malaysian students who want to study medicine should take into account factors such as the competitiveness of the program, scholarship opportunities, salary prospects and cultural fit. There are only two undergraduate medicine programs in Malaysia: one at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) and one at MARA University of Technology (UiTM).

In recent years, the country has seen an increase in the number of students enrolling in these programs. This is because the undergraduate medicine program offers a shorter course duration compared to other medical schools and costs less than 10% of what a student would pay for a bachelor’s degree from abroad. There are two undergraduate medicine programs in Malaysia. One is the MMC which is a public university and the other is UPM which is a private university. MMC provides a quality education for undergraduate medical students. It was established in 1928 and has been ranked as one of the best medical schools in Asia for 8 years in a row by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS). UPM started operating as an international medical school on January 2, 2018 with its first cohort of students. The private college offers only its own undergraduate degree which can be completed entirely online or through part-time courses offered at various locations worldwide. It is also ranked within the top 10 universities worldwide by QS and Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2018. The number of medical students in Malaysia is growing at a rapid pace.

Universiti Malaya’s (UM) undergraduate medicine program is a globally recognized and highly ranked program. It offers undergraduate degrees in Medicine and MBBS, with additional modules offered such as Biomedical Sciences, Dentistry and Pharmacy. It has been rated highly by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE), which is a test required for all doctors seeking to practice in the US. Malaysia’s healthcare system is largely privatized and subsidized; a reflection of the country’s mixed Islamic and capitalist culture. As of 2010, there were an estimated 4,000 to 4,500 doctors practicing in Malaysia. The undergraduate medicine program in Malaysia is an 18-month course that takes place over two semesters per year. The curriculum for this program consists of both didactic learning (lectures) and clinical learning (observation).
